Two houses a block apart in Columbus can be zoned for different schools. If you’re buying in Columbus before a move to Fort Benning, check the exact address, not the subdivision. Here’s how to get a firm answer from Muscogee County School District (MCSD), and what registration takes.

Registering, and enrolling before you arrive

Georgia lets military families enroll before they arrive. Under O.C.G.A. §20-2-150(e), a child of an active-duty service member can enroll with official orders before the family has a Georgia address. Georgia is also in the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, which covers records, course placement and graduation requirements when you transfer mid-year.

What MCSD asks for

✓Two proofs of address in the parent’s name: a current utility or landline bill (not cell, not a final bill), benefits letter or new-construction occupancy permit, plus a lease, tax statement, deed or settlement statement. Your closing paperwork counts.
✓Withdrawal form or most recent report card from the last school.
✓Proof of age, such as a birth certificate. A military ID also works.
✓Social Security card, or a waiver.
✓Georgia Form 3231 (immunizations) and Form 3300 (eye, ear and dental). Out-of-state records usually need moving onto these forms.

Register online through Infinite Campus Online Registration, in English or Spanish. Kindergarten starts at age 5 by September 1. MCSD’s Military Families page lists the Army Youth Program in Your Neighborhood at Columbus, Hardaway, Northside, Shaw and Spencer high schools (706-748-2258).

Magnet applications run once a year at MCSD’s magnet portal. The 2027–28 dates aren’t posted yet; if your orders land you here after the window, call the district and ask what’s still open. Out-of-county and out-of-state students can’t attend Columbus High, Rainey-McCullers, Britt David or Downtown. Open-seat and hardship transfers go through the transfer portal; confirm the 2026–27 window with the district.

Living on Fort Benning instead?

On-post families can use the Fort Benning DoDEA schools: Dexter, McBride, Stowers and E.A. White elementary (pre-K to 5th) and Faith Middle School (6th to 8th). Registration needs active-duty verification and proof of on-post housing. There is no high school on post; the garrison lists Spencer High (Muscogee), Chattahoochee County High and Russell County High, with transportation from post.
